Aston Villa: A History of Managerial Appointments

From the Earliest Days to the Modern Era

Aston Villa Football Club is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in English football. Founded in 1874, the club has won seven FA Cups, five League Championships, and one European Cup. Over the years, Villa has been managed by some of the most famous names in the game, including George Ramsay, Billy McNeill, and Martin O'Neill.

The Early Years

The first manager of Aston Villa was George Ramsay, who was appointed in 1884. Ramsay was a former player for the club and led Villa to their first FA Cup win in 1887. He also oversaw the club's move to their new stadium, Villa Park, in 1897.

The Golden Age

The most successful period in Aston Villa's history came under the management of Billy McNeill. McNeill was appointed in 1984 and led Villa to three League Championships, one FA Cup, and one European Cup in the space of five years. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest managers in the club's history.

The Modern Era

In recent years, Aston Villa has struggled to replicate the success of the McNeill era. The club has appointed a number of managers in the past decade, including David O'Leary, Gérard Houllier, and Tim Sherwood. However, none of these managers have been able to bring sustained success to Villa Park.

The Future

Aston Villa is currently managed by Steven Gerrard. Gerrard was appointed in 2021 and is tasked with rebuilding the club and restoring it to its former glory. It remains to be seen whether Gerrard can achieve this goal, but he is certainly a manager with a proven track record of success.
